Mermaids and sirens and the lore behind them is something I find interesting, and this one is no exception. Immediately we are thrown in the terrifying scene of a young girl being kidnapped from her home and being dumped in the ocean, and this intensity doesn’t let up till the end, taking us through the dark world of the sirens in a gorgeous underwater world.

We meet Theia during her kidnapping and she is bewildered and scared but at the same time she is curious about the world she has now herself in, her surroundings and the people she meets. Learning that everything about her life was a lie was devastating, but she is a siren and with that trouble follows. Luc was who saved her, and I’m still a little undecided about him. In the beginning I thought he was kinda sweet and they way he thought about Theia was something I enjoyed, but it was a little on the quick side. I didn’t get the insta-love vibe but something a little more along the lines of this was maybe they were meant to be.

The building of this in front of us was one of wonderment. The buildings and rooms were beautifully described, it was no wonder Theia was so enthralled by it. The multiple point of views gave different views of all the events, and it was easy to understand what happening and what it all meant for Theia. A few sub plots are introduced and they do all come together toward the end, and help to unravel the mystery behind Theia’s existence and what it means. The mythology and history entwined was captivating and the twist on mermaids fantastic and a unique one. I am hoping that the story doesn’t end here, and the ending does leave room for it to continue, but does still work as a stand alone. So, I’ll just have to wait and see.

Surface takes us through a beautiful underwater world, with characters that each have a story to tell and being mixed with betrayals, scary mythical creatures and a forbidden romance does make for one engrossing read and one that I thought was great. If you are a fan of mermaids, the myths behind them, romance and mystery, you can’t go wrong with Surface.
