Defining Destiny
Defining Destiny - Deanna Chase

I am a hopeless romantic, and a sucker for reading about the whole soul mate thing, so I knew this was right up my alley. Lucy is a wonderful singer, and with her boyfriend Caden, they make unbelievable music together. But he is not what he seems, he’s a jerk and has been working behind her back when it comes to the songs they sing and Lucy writes. She has ventured out on her own, and she is is still amazing singer. As I was reading, I just wanted to do well on her own and rotted for all the way.

Or two main characters and Seth have been through a lot. Both have warded off love for different reasons. Lucy for having been cheated on, and she is still dealing with the loss of her father. thought she was likable, she was pretty resilient for going through some major crap with the ex-boyfriend. Seth, has lost his love in a tragic accident. He has no interest in loving anyone and or letting anyone even close enough for that. His story was so sad, and I felt for him. The side characters were great, well except for Caden, which can I say again, he was a jerk.

The story revolves around the concept that everyone has that one soul mate, the one who they love and are meant to be with. This was listed as a paranormal romance, as when the soul mates were together, they has some kinda of special ability together, I think on that aspect it was a small part. It seemed like it more about learning to live on their own. These two had some major things to overcome, and truths were revealed on both sides. It wasn’t an easy journey for either on them. but this is a journey that you feel all the emotions, grief and love. And raised the question of, is it possible to have more than one soul mate. I thought is was all done really well. and the ending wrapped up all the loose ends too and I was happy with it.

Defining Destiny was an enjoyable read, it had just paranormalcy to it, and the romance was sweet. And with great characters, what more could I have asked for. I look forward to reading more of Chases writing. This is certainly worth the read.

Killer Frost (Mythos Academy, #6)
Killer Frost (Mythos Academy, #6) - Jennifer Estep
Killer Frost is the final installment in the Mythos Academy, one of my favorite series. I have enjoyed each one of the installments, and I can’t believe that it is all over now. But, wow was it awesome! Gwen know that she is Nike’s champion, but what all the means isn’t clear until now. Loki, the God who wants to take over everything, is growing stronger. And, when yet another of her loved ones is placed in harms way, she figures out just what she is meant to do. But the doing is what is going to the hardest part, and what it means for her and her friends.

Gwen is so strong and determined, she isn’t just the weird Gypsy girl that everyone thought she was. Espcially when she saves all their butts. Anyhoo, she has come into her own, and certainly owns who she is, something I am so glad she has decided to accept. Now, Logan is still having a hard time with the things that has happened with Gwen, but he loves her so much. He stands beside her even when she thinks he isn’t. Their relationship was sweetly genuine and I enjoyed every minute of it. All the characters all had such important parts and they are so many of them to tell you about them all, but they were all outstanding in their own ways. But a few just really stuck with me. Nickamedes, the librarian is a grouchy man, but I think it was just what he wanted everyone to believe, and I adored him. But, Gwen’s Grandma Frost was eccentric, strong and loved Gwen with everything in her.

I have to say, this was the darkest installment of the series, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. It was engrossing and I was kept on the edge of my seat, and I think I yelled at the book at few times. There was so many thing going on. People dying, reapers attacking at pretty much every turn, and just plain evil-ass people trying to get what they think they are meant to have. All of this lead up to an epic battle between Gwen and Loki, and I kept turning the pages as fast I could. It was gory, violent and a deadly battle and I began to wonder how it all was going to end and if they were going to win against Loki. I even found myself tearing up at some things that took place, but it was so worth all the holding breath and reading as fast I possibly could and ignoring all things around me. The ending was beyond what I hoping for, but jeez this group went to hell to get there, and I am so sad to see Gwen’s story end.

Killer Frost was an excellent and satisfying conclusion to this series, and if you have been a fan of the series so far, you won’t be disappointed. It is a amazing blend of urban fantasy, mythology and romance all in one. This is such a wonderful series, and one that I would definitely say it Great!

The Darkest Joy (The Darkest Joy, #1)
The Darkest Joy (The Darkest Joy, #1) - Marata Eros

A while back I read a duology by Eros, the writing drew me in, so I when the chance came to read another book from this author, I jumped on it. And I am so happy that I did too. Brooke is a beautifully talented pianist, and well on her way to being even more. That is until she suffers an unthinkable tragedy and loss. After her parents murders, she packs up, sells the family home and moves far enough away that she thinks that she will able to start over. But can she really?

Brooke is young, gorgeous and so such a talented musician. I loved her from the start, and had no problem connecting with her. Growing up playing the piano myself, I could understand her sitting in front of her piano, and losing her self, it is an easy thing to do with beautiful music like that. She is a strong girl especially for what she went through. Chase is the main character, he seemed to be a complex guy. And his back story tells us why. he has a tough guy side, which I liked, but it was his vulnerable side that made me just adore him. Brooke and Chance ahs some chemistry, and the romance was well done, but progressed a little on the fast side, but it didn’t bother me at all. The other side characters, each had their own parts that were an importance, and were pretty great in a few different ways.

This has a wonderful setting in Alaska, it is one place that I move to in a heartbeat. The story itself packed an emotional punch. I felt Brooke’s anguish and loss, and her strength. The killers of her parents were still unknown, and the investigation is still going strong. With it came enough suspense that kept me on my toes trying to figure out who was behind the murders right along with the detectives. I was surprised and not surprised at the same time, when it was revealed who was behind it all, if that makes sense. It was great! Eros, has again captivated with me her writing and characters, and I am curious as to who the second book in this series is going to be about. I know I will certainly be picking it up.

The Darkest Joy was a heart pounding and emotional journey about learning to live and love again, that keeps you rotting for the characters all the way till the end. Pick this one up for sure.

Cinder: Book One in the Lunar Chronicles
Cinder - Marissa Meyer
I have been wanting to read this for quite a while, but haven’t been able to get a copy from my local library. The wonderful Jen over at YA Romantics sent me her copy, and I had to start it the very day it arrived. I am kicking myself for waiting so long to read this. It was amazing. Cinder lives with her step-mother and the two siblings, they treat her different because she is a cyborg. She works as a mechanic of which she is good at, and waiting hand and foot on her step-sisters and step-mother. The plague hits close to home for her, but when she meets Kai, the Prince, things will start to change.

Cinder is an amazing girl, part cyborg, a talented mechanic, with a strong personality that never backs down and I absolutely adored her. Prince Kai is the perfect love interest and prince charming. He’s sweet, kind and loyal, and living in the footsteps of his father, and his upcoming leadership role, it is all a lot for him. Cinder and Kai form a friendship that grows into an adorable romance. The secondary characters like the step-mother and one of the step-sisters are ones that play an important part, but at the same time you just want to pinch their heads off. the entire cast was great though.

The plot captured my attentions from the first chapter. It is a retelling of Cinderella and it had it’s similarities, but Meyer took those and made this her own. You have the step-mother, step-sisters and the prince, but the setting is what makes this unique. The setting of New Beijing, after world set after WW IV, with futuristic technologies, and a plague that is sweeping through the countries. We get a lot of detailed descriptions about the surroundings, gadgets and places and it was so fascinating and I kept turning the pages as fast as I could to find out what was going to happen. The villain is one you love to hate, and the ending had me wanting more, and I am looking forward to picking up Scarlet as soon as I can.

Cinder is a fabulous blend of science fiction, a dystopian world and a sweet and endearing romance. Meyer sucked me in and didn’t let go, the writing is gorgeous. If by chance you haven’t read this, I certainly suggest picking this one up. It was freaking awesome!

Such Sweet Sorrow
Such Sweet Sorrow - Jenny Trout
3.5 hearts

This is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, and at first I was a little afraid of reading this. I am a sucker for the tragic love stories and Romeo and Juliet is a classic one.

The characters, Romeo, Juliet and Hamlet were the way I remember them, but Trout did a great job making them her own for this retelling. Romeo was loyal all the way, and Juliet was strong and loved him dearly. Their romance was so sweet and just how I liked it. Hamlet was the one that I couldn’t really figure out though. He was certainly interesting. We get alternating POV’s from Hamlet and Romeo The journey through hell to get to the bittersweet ending was certainly not without twists and turns, and what would hell be without evil creatures, and they were completely fascinating. The pacing was sometimes on the slow side, but I didn’t lose interest at any time. I am curious if there will be more to the story, with that last few paragraphs. I am hoping that there is.

Such Sweet Sorrow was a retelling that I enjoyed, it had a great blend of the elements of Romeo and Juliet love story and mythology.

Avalon (Avalon, #1)
Avalon (Avalon, #1) - Mindee Arnett

Avalon is the first in a new science fiction series, following Jeth on a journey to retrieve a a missing ship in what is basically a Bermuda Triangle in space only it doesn’t according to plan.

Jeth is the main character and narrator for the book. I think I liked him from the start, he was so protective of his sister and his crew. He might be a little on the impulsive side at first, I think he just liked to have himself in danger, but as I read on, I began to understand him more. The crew were all pretty interesting. There was a romance that blossomed later on, and it was fairly sweet, but was instalove all the same.

This is one those books, that I almost gave up on about a third of the way in, but pushed through. From about half till the end is where this made me happy that I continued reading it. I had a hard time with the pacing until then, I know there was some world building that needed to be done to get the story going, but for me it took a long time and I began to lose interest. There were some events that took place that caught my attention, and between the twists and betrayals and corruption exposed and a few other things, I was engaged. Once everything got going, I didn’t have a hard time with the science fiction aspects and found them easy to follow and understand and found it all pretty interesting. I am hoping to learn more about First Earth, and maybe more about the characters too, so I will be sure an pick up the next installment. Even though I had a few issues in the beginning I ended up enjoy this more that I thought I would.

Avalon’s world was fascinating, and a pretty good start to a new series. I think fans of science fiction will enjoy.

Cover Reveal for Beneath Our Faults by Charity Ferrell

Review for Becoming Alpha (Alpha Girl #1) by Aileen Erin
Becoming Alpha - Aileen Erin

Becoming Alpha is the first in a new werewolf series. The blurb gave a promising concept with the secret boarding school, and thought this one might be a good one to get back into the supernatural world of werewolves. It follows 17 year old Tessa, (love the name too, my Chihuahua’s name is Tessa) who has vision when she touches them. She most teenagers, she just wants to fit and have friends and maybe being in a new state and new school will be what she needs. Only that really isn’t the case, there is something different at this school, which she soon finds out. On another note, as teenage girls, we all want the epic kiss and when gets her, it changes everything dramatically and not in the way she hoping for. But will she make the best of it, or run?

Tessa wasn’t Dastien, well, what can I say but holy hotness! This completely Alpha male is charming and strong, yet overbearing at times too, but even with with full of himself attitude sometimes, I really liked him. The relationship between Tessa and Dastien was on the insta-love side, but in this case it really didn’t bother me. Most supernatural beings have the one soul mate that they are meant to be with, so I tend to get all worked up over the insta-love attraction. Now there is a kinda a love triangle things going on, but it doesn’t really last all that long, so it wasn’t a big deal. The secondary characters

I am a sucker for boarding schools settings and this school, and the idea of a school for werewolves was something that drew me to this story. The more that is revealed about the school, the more it became clear that werewolves weren’t the only supernatural beings walking the halls. The female were’s weren’t thrilled with Tessa at all, because girl were’s are rare, so they aren’t that willing to allow to be apart of their fold. So, of course there is drama plus and the normal teenage drama that occurs in high school, so there isn’t any dull moments in that department. The mystery behind the attacks that are happening, add some suspense and it made me want to turn the pages faster just to find out what was going on. Ooh, and there are vampires too. Love me some vampires. The ending was good, and there is plenty of things that I am hoping for in the next installment, that I will make sure I pick it up. I would love to see more about Tessa and her wolf side, and more about some of the other characters too, especially Meredith. The next book, Avoiding Alpha, it is set to be out May of this year.

Becoming Alpha is an excellent start to a new werewolf series, and is certainly has promise to be a fantastic series. I would definitely recommend this to fans of ya paranormal romances and shapeshifters and other supernatural beings.

Indigo Incite: The Indigo Trilogy: Book One
Indigo Incite: The Indigo Trilogy: Book One - Jacinda Buchmann, Judy Bullard (Illustrator)
This is the first in Indigo Trilogy, and is about indigo children, I will admit that I really didn’t know much about them, and curiosity definitely took over when it came to reading this. Indigo Incite follow twin boys, who of course have a special ability to hear each others thought and communicate, but also can hear the thoughts of those around them. Toby has been kidnapped by people who want to use the indigo’s for basically their own purposes, and this in not going to happen if Tyler and Toby can help it. The problem is, Tyler has to find Toby first, which isn’t going to be easy.

Tyler and Toby are amazing young guys. They live in a foster home with parents who were horrible, and just wanted to money they get for “caring for them”. But even with the home life they had they had, they were still hopeful, and were strong and determined, so it wasn’t hard for me to want them to succeed and get away from it all. Eddie, Liliana and Sarah, the others in their little group were different in so many ways, they all came from different backgrounds, family lives but the connection they had because of their abilities made them become friends quickly and you would think they had known each other for a long time. Needless to say, I think they all were great and I am hoping to get to know them even more as the series goes one.

Being told from a few different POV’s, giving that chance to see all the sides, and with a lot going on from start to finish, it helped immensely. My favorites POV’s of course were Tyler and Toby. The powers were fascinating, and each of the Indigo’s were a little different. Tyler and Toby were separated at the beginning but their brotherly bond was so strong, and never wavered. There were so many things about this book that I enjoyed, the ranging ages of the 5 of them, romances blossoming, not base how they looked or where they were from. Just for who they were, but I am happy that the romance didn’t take over the main point of the plot. The Indigo children were completely fascinating, and learning about them was fantastic. The suspense was spread throughout and kept me turning the pages to see what could happen to them next. Sci-fi has been a hit or miss with me lately, and I have to say that the sc-fi and fantasy aspect was done very well, and I enjoyed it. I think my only complaint about this book be the end. The awful cliffhanger, that’s not to say that I wasn’t happy with because. I just have to want to find out what happen now. Looks like the next book is Indigo Instinct, but I haven’t found a release date yet, but I will be on the lookout.

Indigo Incite is a wonderful start this series, and one that I will looking forward to continuing. It has just the right amount of suspense, great character, and such an interesting concept. I would definitely recommend picking this one up.

Review for Salt (Salt #1) by Danielle Elliso
Salt - Danielle Ellison

Salt is the first in a new series and the first book from Ellison. the idea of witches that protect human from demons is new to me, so I had to give this one a go. The story follow a young girl, who has not only suffered a tragic loss but a tragic loss, Penelope lost her magic. What is a witch to do without her powers, use someone else to help hide it of course and try and get her powers back. There are a few bumps along the way though.

Penelope was a pretty good character. She was stubborn, and flawed, certainly didn’t make great decision. I mean she’s a witch that can’t do magic, I think I would be a little on the grudging side, but she really wasn’t, and I kinda liked her sarcasm and she seemed to handle herself okay. Penelope’s love interest was one that I didn’t really like at first, couldn’t figure out what he was up to, she liked him though, so I tried to give the benefit of the doubt. I did end up liking him more as the story moved on. He does hold some secrets, that I was able to figure out but it didn’t bother me at all. There were a few secondary characters that were okay and I’m sure there will more about them as the series continues.

The plot was great. It has lies, betrayals, and secrets, all the ingredients that I like to read about. It even had a a mystery, that kept my attention and of course witches. I have to admit, I like just about anything with witches, and add demons into the mix, and I’m in. There was enough going on that I never really felt that the story was boring or anything, maybe a little confused but that cleared up the more I read. And the banter between Pen and Carter was an enjoyable bonus. Overall, this was a sound start to a new series, and I will be looking for the next book, I am curious to see where it heads.

Salt was a quick and fun read, full of magic, witches and demons, and some romance too. Fans of young adult paranormal romances will like it, and it was certainly worth reading.

Darkest Day (The 19th Year, #3)
Darkest Day (The 19th Year, #3) - Emi Gayle
This is the third and final installment in The 19th Year Trilogy, and one that I have been looking forward to for a while. It is a series that has been so good, with characters that were just great and such a good storyline as well. I’m sad to see it end, but wow it was was a good ending. Being the third book makes a little harder to not give away too many things but I will do my best. Mac has not had it easy at all, event after event has tested her, and as the time approaches for her to make a final decision as to what supernatural form she will choose, the hardest thing will be if she can give up the only guy she has ever let get close and loved.

Mac has always been one stubborn but so courageous young girl. As her 19th birthday approaches it should be a fun time for her, so I don’t envy her at all for the life changing decisions that she has to make, and I certainly understand her reluctance to give up Winn. Because come on, he is just an amazing guy. Now don’t get me wrong, Mac is hot headed, and doesn’t necessarily always think things through, but she has grown so much when it comes to the way she views the world around her. The realisticness of Mac’s character is what made her an enjoyable heroine. She strong some strength and wit that I was quite pleased with. Winn, well he is as always, just wonderful when it came to Mac, so understanding and loving. The fantastic cast of secondary were awesome, especially good ole Suze. Love him!

The story has quite a few loose ends that were left from the first and second book, and they all came together so well. The pacing was perfect, giving just a little bit of information that played into Mac’s decision about her seat on the Council. Gayle kept me wondering until the very end that’s for sure. There were so many things that happened, from the snarkiness that made me crack up laughing, and those twists that you just don’t see coming that made me so happy. There was even a life lesson that teens have to deal with but should never have to go through that made me cry my eyes out. The ending is exactly how this needed to have it all end, and I couldn’t have been more pleased with it.

Darkest Day is one satisfying conclusion to a series that I am so sad to see end. The whole series is one that I have enjoyed and highly recommend picking up, especially for those who are fans of YA paranormal romances.

Reality Boy
Reality Boy - A. S. King

I have seen this around for a while, and was browsing our library website, and came across this. And boy and I glad I gave this one a try. It follows Gerald, who is now a teenager and an angry one at that. He grew up on TV, a reality show that followed him as a younger child. You would think you would see all of his cute little things he might have done as a little kid, but that is not what they showed on TV. It was the horrible tantrums, and the fact that he is still called the Crapper, even as a teenager, should give the idea of what else he did when things didn’t go his way. This was supposed to a chance for the “Nanny” to help him and his family. Sadly, this wasn’t the case.

Gerald was a broken young man. I don’t know how else to describe him, and it broke my heart to watch all the things that he went through not only as a child but as a teenager. People are afraid of him, they don’t understand him, so they push him off on whoever they think will deal with them. No wonder why he is the way he is. As a parent, it wasn’t hard to find myself being attached to his character/voice and just hoping that he would find some happiness and escape the past. Hanna was about as broken as Gerald, and I liked her Gerald together, it wasn’t always smooth sailing, but that’s what made it enjoyable. It was realistic and sweet. There were quite a few side characters, and the art part they played in Gerald’s story was a great addition.

The plot is like a TV program called Super Nanny, that the Nanny comes and makes the kid behave and all is better, but I always wondered what happens behind the scenes. Like, what was really real and what was put in there to make it more interesting to viewers, and after the Nanny left the families. This answered a lot of those questions, and made glad that I don’t watch reality. This was a raw and gritty look into it all. Since I listened to the audio book, I got to experience his desperation and longing and at times it was hard to listen to. He carries a large amount of anger, and it rightfully so that he does. Gerald has learned most of coping mechanism as he has grown up, he’s had to deal with embarrassment of the episodes of his tantrums, and the fact that his family was massively dysfunctional and everyone saw it. There was a small romance, but luckily it was a sweet one, they both have baggage and I think they were each other needed. The ending was satisfying and I was happy with it, but at the same time it was still heart breaking.

Reality Boy is a gripping and brutally raw and emotional look into the world of one serious messed up family and the effects the reality show had on their family. And the hope of moving on, and learning to there is more to life. I would certainly recommend picking this one up, especially the audio book of it. The narrator was freakin awesome.

Ruined
Ruined - Jus Accardo
I grew up going to church and remember what I learned about Cain and Abel, so when I read the blurb that this was about a decedent of Cain, I knew I had to see what Accardo had in store for Ruined. Jax had been sharing his body with a demon his entire life, and the struggle to not give in to it has now been easy. He leaves home, to keep his family and friends safe, but soon has to return home when a family member is sick. Samantha left home not too long after Jax did and is back home, but the why isn’t clear and she is not telling. Jax is going to soon find out, and now he will have to decide what he going to do to help her, his demon and so many other things too. Including his brother.

Jax is a force to be reckoned with. He has been traveling and seen so many places, all thew while he was just avoiding coming home. I understand the need to push people away with what he is dealing with, but mostly I just wanted to smack him for for being so arrogant about it all. He has a soft side though when it comes to Samantha even if he doesn’t want to admit it. He pushes her away at every turn and she does the same, she was heartbroken when he left, and she ran just like him, which I don’t blamer her for wanting to put it all behind her. I liked Samantha, she was strong and stubborn and didn’t let Jax push her around. Now, Jax, Samantha and Chase the twin brother, all grew up together, and there is history there and we do learn a little about it. Chase, is a complete opposite of Jax. Chase was always the quiet one and the one who didn’t get into trouble that everyone seemed to love. I guess you could say, you have one “good” brother and one “bad” brother, but I just didn’t see Jax as the bad brother, I really liked him. There are a few side characters that I absolutely loved and one particular that played a big part, and was so intriguing, especially at the end.

The story did start off on the slow side, it doesn’t take don’t long for it to pick up. This is a twisted version of Cain and Abel, and the love/hate relationship between the two brothers was done very well, and even if you don’t know much about the story of Cain and Abel, there is plenty of groundwork laid out at the beginning that it is easy to understand what it going on. But this has a twist to, a demon that is living inside Jax is gaining strength and wants to have Jax finally let him have control. There is so much sexual tension between Jax and Samantha is drips off the pages, but there is someone is after Samantha, and Jax isn’t going to give up on finding them so easily. The who, is where this gets interesting, and so many twists come into it all. And chaos ensues. There are demons, betrayals, and a cliffhanger that just about killed me. The second installment in The Eternal Balance is going be Awwwwesome.

This is my first book from Accardo, and I don’t know how I have not read anything from her before. Fans of good versus evil, and fighting for what you want will eat this one up. Ruined is sexy, romantic and full of betrayals and mystery, and needs to be picked up. An excellent start to the series!
